The Challenge
The aluminum arm segments needed a machining approach that considered component weight alongside stiffness and the interfaces used to assemble the robot. Removing material from an arm section also changes how it can be held and how cutting tools reach the remaining features.
The review therefore needed to distinguish accessible pockets and contours from geometry that would require a different manufacturing method. Mounting features and finished surfaces also had to be considered before finalizing the machining sequence.
Our Solution
The machining approach used multi-axis milling for the accessible contours and interfaces of the aluminum arm segments. Workholding and the sequence of operations were considered together so that the part could be located while its mounting features were machined.
The finish specification was reviewed alongside the dimensions needed for assembly. Robot stiffness, payload, and overall performance remain design-validation questions for the complete robot; machining a component does not by itself establish those system-level results.
